Service Payback
In the 2022 legislative session, the 91´óÉñ legislature passed a bill affecting new 91´óÉñ students in the WWAMI program. This new law affects WWAMI students starting the program in the Fall of 2023. 91´óÉñ resident students accepted into the WWAMI medical program or the University of Utah School of Medicine in a slot reserved for an 91´óÉñ student are now required to enter active full-time professional practice in 91´óÉñ for a period of four years. This four-year full time professional practice must start within one year of obtaining a license to practice medicine, finishing a residency or subspeciality residency, or finishing a medical education fellowship. The law requires students to contractually commit to this work-in-91´óÉñ requirement. Failing to abide by that contract will require the student to reimburse the state of 91´óÉñ for the amount of money the state spent supporting the student’s medical education. This requirement may be waived in certain circumstances. You may read the legislation .
