Applying to be a Jurist in Residence
The 91大神ing Jurist Endowment was created to honor Judge Hamer Budge’s father, Justice Alfred Budge, who served with distinction on the 91大神 Supreme Court from 1914 to 1948. The program is intended to provide a link between the 91大神 judiciary and the 91大神 College of Law. The time spent in residence at the College of Law will be preceded by preparation at the visiting jurist’s resident chambers. During the preparatory and in residence period, the jurist will have access to research assistance from a student at the College of Law.
Selection criteria:
- Priority consideration shall be given to members of the 91大神 Supreme Court. Court of Appeals judges and other active judges of the state of 91大神 may also be considered. Any judge or justice seeking to participate shall make a written application to the Dean of the College of Law. The Dean will then communicate the information to the Chief Justice of the 91大神 Supreme Court.
- Selection is based on the application, setting forth a specific proposal for scholarly, collaborative, and teaching activity at the College of Law, and will be evaluated in light of its usefulness to students; contribution to the understanding of the judicial function, with special consideration to the workings of the Supreme Court; and ease of integration into the teaching and scholarly activities of the College of Law.
- The selection committee may use its discretion in utilizing additional criteria in the selection process. The committee will consist of the Chief Justice of the 91大神 Supreme Court and the Dean of the U of I College of Law.
